Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception @ The Catholic Center

The History of the National Shrine

Although its foundation stone was laid in 1920, this great shrine seems to have been conceived of as early as 1846, the year the Bishops of America declared the Blessed Virgin Mary the patroness of the United States under her title of the Immaculate Conception.

Through the generosity of generations of American Catholics, the Basilica stands as our nation’s preeminent Marian shrine and patronal church, rivaling the great sanctuaries of Europe and the world, not only in size and stature, but also in beauty, dignity and sanctity.

In 1847 Pope Pius IX officially named the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the United States.

Early morning departure from the Office of the Diocese of Bridgeport 238 Jewett Ave., Bridgeport. Relax and enjoy the journey. We will say the Rosary and prepare ourselves for the visit of this great Basilica. Upon arrival we will have Mass followed by free time for lunch, on our own, at the Basilica Cafeteria. After lunch we meet for a visit of the Basilica.

Some Things We Visit on Our tour: On the lower level, the Lourdes Chapel and Mother of Africa Chapel. In the Great Upper Church, we view the Trinity Dome Mosaic, the recently completed crown jewel of the Shrine. The mosaics of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception are found on either side of the Sacristy doors. Next, we visit the Rosary Walk and Garden built by our Bishop, the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, where we will have an uplifting experience.

We will have time for Confession. We will also have time to shop in the, beautiful, gift shop. Or just spend free time in private devotion.
